Silver Sponsor

Mid-Atlantic Broadband (MBC) operates an advanced open-access fiber-optic network in Southern Virginia, providing wholesale telecommunications transport, dark fiber, and colocation services. The MBC network provides 10G and 100G transport services to major carrier interconnection and peering points in Atlanta, Georgia; Ashburn, Virginia; Culpeper, Virginia; Richmond, Virginia; and Charlotte, North Carolina. Since its inception in 2004 and by offering a state-of-the-art fiber optic network, MBC has supported the recruitment of major investments to southern Virginia including data centers, call centers/operations centers, advanced manufacturing, research and development, and bio-tech industries, with companies such as Microsoft and HP Enterprise locating their operations in the region.

Southern Virginia provides an environment ideal for data centers to thrive. In addition to the robust MBC network in place in the region, the Commonwealth of Virginia provides incentives including sales and use tax exemptions for data centers meeting certain investment and employment requirements and exemptions on qualifying data center equipment, including servers, routers, generators, chillers and other enabling hardware. The power rate in the region is low – the industrial rate of Dominion is 5.44 cent/kwh, 34% below the U.S. average – meaning that data centers can locate with affordable, reliable power. Currently, Dominion has more than 400 megawatts of renewable energy on the grid and by 2025 plans to meet Virginia’s goal of 15% of power generated deriving from renewable sources (water, solar, and biomass).

Southern Virginia is also home to the IT Academy at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC). The IT Academy prepares individuals with CompTIA training and certification in A+ and Server+ as well as intermediate and advanced training in Network+ and Security+. MBC is a proud supporter of the IT Academy, ensuring that the workforce exists to support the success of data centers in the region.
